For as long as I can remember, Mashable has been the ‘go-to’ blog for information about pretty much everything I love. Social Media, iPhones, Android, Tablets, cool new businesses, all sorts. It’s an awesome resource and I recommend to all my clients to bookmark it, and frequently visit it, to keep up to date in the world of Social Media.
But there is a problem. And it’s a surprising one. The mobile viewing experience of Mashable is really bad.
It starts with their iPhone app. Firstly, it crashes lots. And I mean a lot. I appreciate that this could be an issue that only I have. But I have used the app on 3 separate iPhone over 3 generations of the device, and always suffered from slow (or never) updating topic lists, and frequent unexpected crashes. Maybe it is iOS fault? After all, Mashable themselves recently blogged that iOS Apps Crash More Than Android Apps.
Then, if you get the app working, and happen to choose a blog item that uses their ‘Gallery’ format – you are faced with a blank article. Sometimes it directs you to view in Safari, but as the Gallery feature doesn’t work well at all on an iPhone. And you are constantly reminded by a floating banner on the iPhone that there is an App available, which is very annoying.
All of this is a great shame. Mainly because I love Mashable, and read the site all the time, and it would be lovely to have a smooth mobile experience. But primarily because Mashable should be leading the way on this sort of thing. They are, after all, one of the power houses of social media influence.
